Two state courts, either county or district, handle criminal cases in Grand County, Colorado.  Crimes are classified as either a felony, a misdemeanor, a petty offense, or a municipal ordinance violation.  Municipal ordinance violations may include zoning matters, traffic and miscellaneous other offenses.  Felonies generally start in the county court but then are transferred to Grand County district court.  Misdemeanors and petty offenses are conducted in the county court.  Municipal ordinance violations are held in the local municipal courts either in Granby, Winter Park, Fraser, Hot Sulphur Springs, Grand Lake, or Kremmling.  Felonies are the most serious cases, misdemeanors are in the middle, and petty offenses and municipal ordinance violations are the least serious.  Convictions may result in more than just possible jail and/or fines.  Convictions may affect your current and future employment opportunities.

In Grand County courts the local district attorneys generally prosecute criminal cases.  These district attorneys frequently change as they seek employment elsewhere.  I have represented many people in criminal cases wherein I have opposed the district attorneys' efforts for convictions.

DUI AND TRAFFIC:

Traffic cases include driving under the influence (DUI), driving under revocation (DUR), driving while ability impaired (DWAI), other traffic violations and motor vehicle hearings.  Traffic, DUI, or DWAI charges affect your right to drive and may affect your employment.  Either DUI - alcohol or drugs, or DWAI - alcohol or drugs, charges may lead to driver's license suspension per the point system imposed by the Colorado Motor Vehicle Division.  In addition to jail and/or possible fines, DUI and DWAI may result in useful public service, probation, and alcohol/drug evaluation and treatment.  Convictions may affect your automobile insurance rates.

The Colorado Motor Vehicle Division, not the courts, assesses points against your driver's license and makes decisions to suspend or revoke your driving privilege.

Grand County has its own unique prosecutors and judges who handle the traffic and alcohol or drug cases.  I have completed many traffic, DUI and motor vehicle cases involving the judges and other people who will be involved in making decisions in your case.
